Galway Midwinter Festival 20th & 22nd January 2012 Music for Galways Midwinter Festival returns to the Town Hall Theatre in January. Sponsored by DERI and this year entitled Intimate Voices it features Galway's ConTempo Quartet and the vibrant Dutch Amstel Quartet in an eclectic programme full of surprises. Four strings or four saxophones-some fantastic music in a new light: Bach Fugues arranged by Mozart, Wagner's Ring cycle in 21 minutes, Janacek's Intimate Voices quartet, Philip Glass and Arvo Port. Baritone Gavan Ring, winner of the inaugural Bernadette Greevy Bursary joins ConTempo for Samuel Barber's evocative Dover Beach. Choreographer Judith Sibley and video artist Mihai Cucu add their talents to the mix, and a chance to Meet the Musicians will take place with young Galway music students and ConTempo's Apprentice Ensemble, Chatham Saxophone Quartet. Safety Direct Galway International Rally 4th & 5th February 2012 Safety Direct, a leading supplier of safety and health products based in Galway, has long been the sponsor of the Galway International Rally. The rally has a notable place in Ireland's road racing history, as it was the 1st round of the Irish Tarmac Championship which was first held in 1978. Clifden 200 Railway & Transport Heritage Weekend 17th - 19th February 2012 Clifden 200 Railway & Transport Heritage Weekend takes place from Friday-Sunday, 17th-19th February, 2012. Muscailt Arts Festival 7th - 12th February Muscailt, meaning to celebrate and inspire is the title of the celebrated spring arts festival hosted by the National University of Ireland, Galway. The 2012 event will be running from Monday February 9 to Friday 13, with plenty of concerts, exhibitions, talks, and events to inspire both the campus and wider public. Tedfest - Fr. Ted Festival 23th - 26th February 2012 The Fr. Ted Festival which is popularly known as Ted Fest, is a celebration of the life of comedian Dermot Morgan and his 1990's cult TV sitcom Father Ted created by Graham Linehan and Arthur Matthews. The event sees large numbers of fans take to the islands, most dressed as characters from the show. The event involves taking part in many themed events associated with the comedy series including fancy dress, five-aside football (nuns against priests), toilet duck comedy awards, buckaroo speed dating, lovely girls contest and A Song For Europe. Connemara International Marathon 01st April 2012 2012 is the 11th Connemara Marathon and a celebration night will be held in both Galway and Clifden. Lughnasa Festival at Craggaunowen 08 April 2012 Come and experience Ireland's history and heriatge from Bronze Age to Medieval Times in Craggaunowen, Quin, Co. Clare. The Lughnasa event features a fantastic array of costumed re-enactors depicting life in Ireland from the Bronze Age to Medieval times. There will be lots to see and do including combat demonstrations, brehon law trials, ancient cooking demonstrations, artefacts and weapons display, ancient fun and games for the kids and much more!
Clifden Traditional Music Festival 13th - 15th April 2012 Clifden Traditional Music Festival is a weekend of the very best of Irish music, song and dance with concerts, sessions, workshops and outdoor entertainment. The 2011 festival was a great success with the town filled with music and excitement throughout the whole weekend. The festival includes Music Workshops, Sean Nos Dance Workshops, Youth Sessions, Traditional Music Mass, Pub Sessions throughout the whole weekend, "Farewell Session" on Sunday. Cuirt International Festival of Literature 24th -29th April 2012 The Cuirt International Festival of Literature is Ireland's premier literary event. The festival annually brings approximately sixty authors of local, national and international repute to Galway for readings, workshops, discussions, book signings and much, much more. Feile na Ceardlainne Dates TBC Feile na Ceardlainne is a festival of Craft running in late April at Spiddal Craft & Design Studios. There will be a host of free craft, music and dance events for all ages during the Easter holidays including free craft workshops in pottery, kite making, tai chi, glass making, making a friendship bracelet, making a button badge, a feeling for clay.

Connemara Mussel Festival 04th - 06th May 2012 A celebration of Killary Mussels harvested from One of the Forty Places to See Before you Die takes place from the 4th-6th May 2012, on the glorious Renvyle Peninsula in North Connemara. This is the seventh year of the festival and promises that more mussels will be eaten here this weekend than in any other part of the country. Last year, over a ton of mussels were eaten and organisers are set to harvest three tonnes of Killary Mussels for this year's celebrations, which include music, fun, mussel cooking competitions, children's treasure hunts and set dancing, to name but a few. Leenane Mountain Walking Festival 04th - 7th May 2012 The Leenane Mountain Walking Festival includes a choice of high-level mountain walks or a low-level option, and enjoy a unique combination of mountain and sea along the way. Connemara Adventure Challenge 12th May 2012 The race has three disciplines: Trail / Mountain Running, Kayaking and Cycling. The course will be exceptional, the scenery spectacular, so now all that's needed is good weather. The Connemara Adventure Challenge is 31km in total and it is open to racers of all levels. Inishbofin Half-Marathon 12th May 2012 The half marathon will take place on Saturday in mid May. The route, which will utilise the main road around the island, offers stunning views from every side of the island and will be challenging! Uniquely, due to the narrow roads, this 13.1 mile run or walk is offered as a time-trial with runners/ walkers starting in pairs at 15 second intervals. Clifden 200 25th May - 04th June 2012 Clifden 200 will celebrate the 200th anniversary of the founding of the town of Clifden, the capital of Connemara, in 1812 with a series of indoor and outdoor events focusing on the rich heritage of the region. For more see - www.clifden2012.org

Connemara Rough Diamond Adventure 2nd June 2012 Connemara Rough Diamond adventure race involves a beach run, an assault course, a bike ride and a mountain race. There will be a sports and elite race. Sports race . Beach Steeplechase 1mile 4 furlong, 21km road cycle, 10 minute assault course, mountain run 7.5km. Little Havana Festival 01st - 3rd June 2012 Cuban-inspired music, dance, street entertainment, art and cultural events feature in the busy programme of on-street and on-premise activity, creating a unique opportunity for visitors to immerse themselves in a colorful Cuban atmosphere reminiscent of Havana itself. An eclectic and fun-filled Latin Street Party, its three-day programme of free events will bring the rhythms and sounds of Havana to the medieval streets of Galway. International Quilt Festival of Ireland 7th - 10th June 2012 The International Quilt Festival of Ireland is a 6 day festival that will take place on the NUIG campus, and will feature a dedicated Quilt Village along with a Farmer's Market, a Brown Bread Shop and Chocolate stand. Volvo Ocean Race Finale 3rd - 8th July 2012 The yachts in the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-2012 are due to arrive in Galway City on Tuesday July 3, 2012. From the 3rd - 8th July 2012 Galway will be transformed into one big outdoor festival venue, the largest ever to take place in the medieval city. Pro-Am racing will take place in Galway Bay on Friday, July 6 and In-Port Racing is scheduled for Saturday, July 7th. Both of these events will be viewed from the Promenade in Salthill but only the in-port race will be competitive in terms of earning points for teams overall standing in the round the world event. Roundstone Connemara Pony, Dog & Sheep Show 08th July 2012 The 7th Annual Roundstone Connemara Pony, Dog & Sheep Show takes place on Sunday, 8th July, 2012, at the Showground. The main event, the Connemara Pony Show, consists of 20 in-hand classes showcasing all ages and varieties of Connemara Pony. A Dog Show and Sheep Show are also included in the day's events. Connemara Pony Show, Clifden, Co Galway. 5th - 12th August 2012 Premier show for Connemara Ponies in Ireland for breeders and owners from home and overseas. The annual Connemara Pony Festival & Show attracts visitors from all over the world. The highlight of the festival is on Thursday and Friday, when the biggest showcase of Connemara Ponies in the world takes place. Ponies compete in in-hand classes, ridden classes, working hunter classes, and a puissance (or high jump) competition. The Connemara 100 Dates TBC The Connemara 100 mile endurance run with 30 hour limit takes place on August 2012. The course is simply fabulous, taking participants from Clifden through Letterfrack, Leitirgeish, the Inagh alley, Maam Cross, Leenane, Inagh Valley again, then on to Roundstone, Ballyconeely and back to Clfden to complete 100 miles.
Gaelforce West and Get Out There Adventure Festival 18th August 2012 Gaelforce West is the largest one day adventure race of its kind in the world. It is a multi-sport adventure race involving cycling, running, hiking and kayaking. The course of approximately 67km stretches from the stunning Glassilaun beach to Westport. En route there are some significant obstacles to cross, including Killary Harbour and the famous holy mountain of Croagh Patrick. Cruinniu na mBad Festival 17th - 19th August 2012 Up to 100 unique Irish boats, the Galway Hookers, once the workhorses of the coast of Connemara and North Clare, will gather for a weekend of racing and celebration at Cruinniu na mBad (Gathering of the Boats) festival in Kinvara, Co. Clarenbridge Oyster Festival Dates TBC Great food, great Guinness, great music and entertainment all in a splendid marquee on the banks of the Claren River which flows through the village of Clarenbridge on the edge of Galway Bay.
Galway Americana Festival 13th - 16th September 2012 The title of this years festival is 'Go Wild In The West!' which involves a series of gigs and sessions in a variety of venues in the most happening part of Galway town; the West End! The festival will feature a genuine Americana legend in the form of Jim Rooney, who apart from being a leading industry figure in Nashville is also somewhat of a local hero, having spent much of his time over the last decade or so here and hereabouts, primarily in Ballindereen, Co Galway. In general Ireland's appetite for Americana has grown in recent years, and has given rise to an increasing number of bands who are interested in exploring the musical relationship and mutual heritage of Ireland and America. Clifden Arts Week Dates TBC The longest running community arts festival in Ireland, Clifden Community Arts Week, now in its 35th year yet again promises to have something to excite everyone in this years programme. Tulca Festival of Visual Arts 9th - 25th November 2012 The Tulca Festival of Visual Arts is an annual festival taking place in Galway each year. Running since 2002, Tulca features dynamic and exciting work from national and international visual art practitioners. This year's festival is entitled After the Fall and highlights include renowned Romanian artist Lia Perjovschi's creation of an installation in the foyer of The James Hardiman Library in NUI Galway and a workshop by Frances Whitehead The Embedded Artist Project: Strategies for Civic Engagement. Fields of Athenry 10km 26th December 2012 The 10th running of the Fields of Athenry 10km will take place on St. Stephen's day, December 26th at 11am. Over the last number of years this has has become of of the leading road races in the country, and this year it aims to raise the bar higher. The race returns to its now traditional route, finishing under the medival arch in Athenry.

Inishbofin Half-Marathon 12th May 2012 The half marathon will take place on Saturday in mid May. The route, which will utilise the main road around the island, offers stunning views from every side of the island and will be challenging! Uniquely, due to the narrow roads, this 13.1 mile run or walk is offered as a time-trial with runners/ walkers starting in pairs at 15 second intervals. Volvo Ocean Race Finale 3rd - 8th July 2012 The yachts in the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-2012 are due to arrive in Galway City on Tuesday July 3, 2012. From the 3rd - 8th July 2012 Galway will be transformed into one big outdoor festival venue, the largest ever to take place in the medieval city. Pro-Am racing will take place in Galway Bay on Friday, July 6 and In-Port Racing is scheduled for Saturday, July 7th. Both of these events will be viewed from the Promenade in Salthill but only the in-port race will be competitive in terms of earning points for teams overall standing in the round the world event. Connemara Pony Show, Clifden, Co Galway. 5th - 12th August 2012 Premier show for Connemara Ponies in Ireland for breeders and owners from home and overseas. The annual Connemara Pony Festival & Show attracts visitors from all over the world. The highlight of the festival is on Thursday and Friday, when the biggest showcase of Connemara Ponies in the world takes place. Ponies compete in in-hand classes, ridden classes, working hunter classes, and a puissance (or high jump) competition. The Connemara 100 Dates TBC The Connemara 100 mile endurance run with 30 hour limit takes place on August 2012. The course is simply fabulous, taking participants from Clifden through Letterfrack, Leitirgeish, the Inagh alley, Maam Cross, Leenane, Inagh Valley again, then on to Roundstone, Ballyconeely and back to Clfden to complete 100 miles.
Gaelforce West and Get Out There Adventure Festival 18th August 2012 Gaelforce West is the largest one day adventure race of its kind in the world. It is a multi-sport adventure race involving cycling, running, hiking and kayaking. The course of approximately 67km stretches from the stunning Glassilaun beach to Westport. En route there are some significant obstacles to cross, including Killary Harbour and the famous holy mountain of Croagh Patrick. Fields of Athenry 10km 26th December 2012 The 10th running of the Fields of Athenry 10km will take place on St. Stephen's day, December 26th at 11am. Over the last number of years this has has become of of the leading road races in the country, and this year it aims to raise the bar higher. The race returns to its now traditional route, finishing under the medival arch in Athenry.
